Active recall means testing yourself instead of rereading. Rereading creates a fluency illusion: material looks familiar, so it feels known. Exams test whether you can produce it from memory, and retrieval practice is what builds that ability.
Retrieval feels effortful and full of failure, and the effort is the mechanism. If your revision feels comfortable, it is probably not doing much.
Blurt after each session, turn the gaps into cards the same day, review on a spaced schedule, and do practice questions at the weekend. For essay subjects, add planning practice as covered in our A-Level essay structure guide.
